“I tell my love to wreck it all
Cut out all the ropes and let me fall”
– “Skinny Love” by Bon Iver, performed by Birdy
She was flying. The music swelled in the circus tent as she danced through the sky, hearing the screams and the awe of the spectators. They looked like ants to her from the highest platform. She nodded to her lover, her partner, her friend across the canopy and leapt. The air was rushing past her face, the thrill of this, their final stunt, the leap of faith, encapsulated by the free fall. Only when the rope around her waist failed to tighten did she relax. She had asked him to do this one last deed for their love, to let her go, falling though the air like the bird she could never be to get the freedom she never had. Her last thought was a thank you, carried up from her heart by a swell from the piano. Freedom, finally.
